John Amos (2011)

John Amos (born December 27, 1939 in Newark , New Jersey , USA ; born John A. Amos, Jr. ) is an American film and television actor and former professional American football player.

He was born in Newark, the son of auto mechanic John Amos Sr. and his wife Annabelle. During his college days at Colorado State University , he played on the national team before joining the Norfolk Neptunes American football team as a professional in the late 1960s. He later switched to acting and in the early 1970s came through guest appearances on The Bill Cosby Show , to supporting roles in well-known television series. Numerous roles in feature films and television productions followed.

In the United States, he is best known for his role in the 1970s sitcoms Mary Tyler Moore and Good Times . Well-known film productions in which he starred are The Prince of Zamunda , Beastmaster - The Liberator and Die Hard 2 .

He won three awards for his performance on television series such as Mary Tyler Moore and Roots .
