John Bayard

John Bubenheim Bayard (born August 11, 1738 in Cecil County , Province of Maryland , †  January 7, 1807 in New Brunswick , New Jersey ) was an American politician . In 1785 and 1786 he was a delegate for Pennsylvania in the Continental Congress .

Career

Nothing is known about the youth and schooling of John Bayard. In 1756 he came to Philadelphia where he worked in commerce. In the 1770s he joined the revolutionary movement. Between 1776 and 1779 and again in 1784 he sat as a member of the House of Representatives from Pennsylvania , of which he was president several times. Bayard also participated in the War of Independence as a member of a volunteer unit from Philadelphia . He was involved in several battles.

Between 1785 and 1786 he was a delegate to the Continental Congress. In 1788 he moved to New Brunswick, New Jersey, where he was elected mayor in 1790. Later he was a judge at the court of appeal there, which suggests an earlier law degree not mentioned in the sources. He was a member of the American Philosophical Society since 1787 . John Bayard died on January 7, 1807. His nephew James A. Bayard (1767-1815) represented Delaware in both houses of Congress .
