John Blashford-Snell

John Nicholas Blashford-Snell CBE (born October 22, 1936 in Hereford , England ) is a former officer in the British Army , who became known as an explorer and author . He founded Operation Raleigh and the Scientific Exploration Society .

Life

Blashford-Snell is the son of Reverend Leland John Blashford-Snell and Gwendoline Ives Sadler. He grew up in Herefordshire and Jersey and studied at the Royal Military Academy Sandhurst . He joined the British Army's Royal Engineers as an officer in 1957 . After long years of service, he retired as a colonel in 1991 .

In addition to his military career, he earned a reputation as an explorer and author. His Great Abbai Expedition made the first complete crossing of the Blue Nile in 1968 . At the request of Emperor Haile Selassie , he put together a team of 60 British and Ethiopian soldiers and scientists and had specially constructed boats built with which his expedition crossed the Blue Nile in two sections to the Sudanese border. In 1969, Blashford-Snell founded the Scientific Exploration Society . For crossing the Congo (1974 to 1975) he received the Segrave Trophy of the Royal Automobile Club and the Livingstone Medal of the Royal Scottish Geographical Society .

Blashford-Snell and Prince Charles started Operation Drake in 1978 , a circumnavigation of the world with a multinational team of youth. The successor was Operation Raleigh , which is committed to sustainable development in countries in South America, Africa and Asia. In 1993 Blashford-Snell received the Patron's Gold Medal from the Royal Geographical Society .
