John Edward Brooks, Baron Brooks of Tremorfa DL (* 12. April 1927 , † 4. March 2016 ) was a British politician ( Labor Party ), Life Peer and boxing official .

life and career

Brooks was born in 1927 to Edward George Brooks and Rachel White. He attended Coleg Harlech , a secondary college , in Harlech , Merionethshire , Wales , and studied at University College, Cardiff .

Brooks was Labor Party Secretary for the Cardiff South East constituency from 1966 to 1984. He joined the Labor Party in the general election in February 1974 and the general election in October 1974 in the constituency Barry February at. Brooks served as the Parliamentary Agent for James Callaghan .

He was a member of the Glamorgan City Council from 1973 to 1993. From 1973 to 1977 and from 1986 to 1992 he was group chairman (Leader); from 1981 to 1982 he was Chairman (Chairman) of the body. From 1978 to 1979 he was chairman (chairman) of the Labor Party in Wales. He was a member of Cardiff Bay Development Corporation since 1987 (until 1996) and also became its Deputy Chairman . Since 1994 he has been Deputy Lieutenant (DL) of South Glamorgan . He lived in Rumney , a part of Cardiff .

Having since 1986 Steward 1999-2000 Vice Chairman (Vice-Chairman) of the British Boxing Board of Control had been, he was its president since of 2004. He has also been Chairman of the Welsh Sports Hall of Fame since 1988 and Sportsmatch Wales since 1992 .

Membership in the House of Lords

Brooks was named a Life Peer as Baron Brooks of Tremorfa, of Tremorfa in the County of Glamorgan on July 17, 1979 . Its official introduction to the House of Lords took place on July 23, 1979 with the assistance of Gordon Parry, Baron Parry and Lord Leonard . He gave his inaugural address on October 24, 1979.

From 1980 to 1981 he was the opposition spokesman for defense. He played an important role in the redevelopment of the dock area in Cardiff, now known as Cardiff Bay. In the 1980s he spoke out on the subjects of education, the Arab-Israeli conflict and the subject of “Central and Local Administration”. He spoke in the 1990s on Volunteering in Wales , the Cost of UK EU Membership and the Local Government (Wales) Bill . In the 2000s, he spoke up on nursing home requirements and Brixton Prison . He last spoke out in writing in 2003.

From 1990 to 1991 he was a member of the Ecclesiastical Committee and from 1980 to 1998 the Statutory Instruments Committee . In July 2000, he was one of 18 Labor peers who rejected a bill and caused it to fail.

He was regularly present on meeting days. On July 18, 2014, he received a Leave of Absence from the House of Lords and was thus on leave of absence from work in Parliament until his death.

Honors

He was an Honorary Fellow of the University of Wales Institute, Cardiff (UWIC).

family

He married in 1948 and divorced in 1956. In 1958 he married Margaret Pringle for the second time. He has a son and a daughter with his first wife and two sons with his second wife. One of the sons, Anthony Brooks, died in January 2004 of cancer .
