John Bogle

John Clifton "Jack" Bogle (born May 8, 1929 in Verona , New Jersey , † January 16, 2019 in Bryn Mawr , Pennsylvania ) was an American entrepreneur and author of economics books on investments . He founded and led the Vanguard Group and was with it a pioneer in the field of index funds .

Career

Bogle graduated in 1947 at the Blair Academy before he graduated in 1951 in economics at Princeton University magna cum laude graduated. He later worked at Wellington Management before being fired at the age of 37 after making a bad investment. Between 1969 and 1970 he chaired the Investment Company Institute , the amalgamation of US investment companies , and was a member of the board of directors until 1974.

In 1974, Bogle founded the investment company The Vanguard Group , whose fortunes he led until 1996 as Chief Executive Officer and then until 2000 as Senior Chairman . The company was the first to offer an index fund for private investors, and Bogle is believed to be the inventor of index funds. Working on the principles of index investing , the company developed into one of the largest investment firms in the United States. He later served as president of the company's own Bogle Financial Markets Research Center . From the 1990s he appeared as an author several times, his debut work New Perspectives for the Intelligent Investor , published in 1993, became a bestseller .

Bogle has received multiple awards for his work. Among these, the inclusion in the Time 100 in 2004 stands out, five years earlier Fortune had also counted him among the four "Giants of the 20th Century" alongside Warren Buffett , Peter Lynch and George Soros . In 2004 Institutional Investor honored him for his life's work. In the same year he was also accepted into the American Academy of Arts and Sciences and the American Philosophical Society . Several universities awarded him honorary doctorates .
