John Campbell (jazz pianist)
John Campbell (born July 7, 1955 in Bloomington (Illinois) ) is an American pianist of modern jazz and mainstream jazz .
Live and act
Campbell grew up in the American Midwest and took piano lessons as a teenager. He later studied at Illinois State University . He moved to Chicago in 1977 , then to New York City in the 1980s . Campbell a. a. with Terry Gibbs , Buddy DeFranco ( Holiday for Swing , 1988), Eddie Harris , James Moody , Charles McPherson, and Clark Terry ; In the late 1980s he accompanied Mel Tormé .
In 1989 Campbell recorded his first album under his own name for the Contemporary Records label ( After Hours ). Clark Terry appeared on the next album Turning Point (1990) as a guest soloist. In 1992 he played in the band of trumpeter Greg Gisbert and Pete Minger .
In 1993 he recorded a highly regarded solo album for Concord Jazz in the At Maybeck: Maybeck Recital Hall Series , with interpretations of jazz standards such as “ Just Friends ”, “Darn that Dream”, Cole Porter's “You and the Night and the Music ”or Johnny Mandel's “ Emily ”. In 2000 the album Workin 'Out was created on the CrissCross label in trio with bassist Jay Anderson and drummer Billy Drummond . He continued to work in California in the 2000s with Gerald Wiggins ( Celebrating Wig's 80th at The Jazz Bakery ), Jeff Kaye, Nick Peck, Jack Nimitz and Doug MacDonald .
