John Carl Murchie , CB , CBE , CD (born June 7, 1895 in Edmundston , Madawaska County , New Brunswick ; † March 5, 1966 in Ottawa , Ontario ) was a Canadian officer who served as lieutenant general between 1944 and 1945 as chief of the general staff of Army was.

Life

After attending school, John Carl Murchie completed an officer training course at the Royal Military College of Canada in Kingston and, after graduating in 1915, took part in the First World War as a member of the army in France . After his return, Murchie was promoted to major general on February 15, 1942 and served as Vice-Chief of the Army General Staff from February 15, 1942 to May 2, 1945. He was also the commanding general of the Pacific Army Command between June 1 and September 2, 1942 . On May 3, 1944, he replaced Lieutenant General Kenneth Stuart at the Headquarters for National Defense as Chief of the Army General Staff and remained in this post until August 20, 1945, when he was succeeded by Lieutenant General Charles Foulkes . On June 2, 1943, he became Commander of the Order of the British Empire (CBE). On May 3, 1944, he was promoted to lieutenant general . He was also Companion of the Order of the Bath (CB) on January 1, 1945 .

After the war ended, Lieutenant General Murchie was sent back to Great Britain, where he was Chief of Staff at the Canadian Military Headquarters between 1946 and his retirement in 1946.
