John Christopher Cody

John Christopher Cody (born December 16, 1899 in Ottawa , † December 5, 1963 in London , Ontario ) was a Canadian Roman Catholic clergyman and bishop of London in Ontario.

Life

John Christopher Cody was one of eleven children of a family of Irish descent. He received his first education at St Malachy's and St Mary's Schools in Ottawa. In September 1912, he was one of the first students to enter St. Alexandre's College of Spiritans in Limbour , Québec , for a basic course there. His further training took him to the Sulpizian seminary in Montreal and the Great Seminary in Ottawa. Some months before reaching the canonical age he received on May 26, 1923 in Ottawa by Archbishop Joseph-Médard Émard the priesthood for the Archdiocese of Ottawa . He worked as a pastor in various parishes in the Archdiocese of Ottawa.

Pope Pius XI appointed John Christopher Cody Bishop of Victoria, British Columbia on January 5, 1937 . At the age of 37, he was Canada's youngest bishop at the time. He received his episcopal ordination on February 25, 1938, the Archbishop of Ottawa Joseph-Guillaume-Laurent Forbes ; Co- consecrators were William Mark Duke , Archbishop of Vancouver , and Louis Rhéaume OMI , Bishop of Haileybury , Ontario.

On April 6, 1946, John Christopher Cody was called Titular Bishop of Elatea and Coadjutor Bishop of the Canadian Diocese of London, Ontario. He succeeded his predecessor John Thomas Kidd as Bishop of London on June 2, 1950 .

Bishop Cody died unexpectedly on December 5, 1963 of complications from a cerebral haemorrhage.

Act

John Christopher Cody was known for his extensive knowledge of the French language and was of the opinion that every Canadian should master both of the official languages ​​of Canada. This made him a supporter of bilingualism in Canada .
