John E. Brooks

John E. Brooks SJ (born July 13, 1923 in Dorchester , Massachusetts , † July 2, 2012 in Worcester , Massachusetts) was an American Jesuit and university professor .

Life

Brooks began his studies at the College of the Holy Cross in Worcester, Massachusetts in 1942 , but then joined the Army Signal Corps in 1943 . He took part in the Second World War and was from 1944 to 1946 a. a. used in northern France , the Rhineland and the Ardennes .

After the war he resumed his studies of physics at the College of the Holy Cross ( Bachelor 1949) and then studied geophysics at Pennsylvania State University (Bachelor 1950) and philosophy at Boston College ( Master 1954). Brooks joined the religious community of the Jesuits in the religious province of New England in 1950 . He initially taught mathematics and physics. After studying theology at Weston College (Bachelor 1959) he was ordained a priest on June 13, 1959 by Richard Cardinal Cushing . After a year of Jesuit training in Pomfret , he graduated in geophysics from Boston College (MS 1960). At the Pontifical Gregorian University , he was in 1963 - during the Second Vatican Council in - Rome to Doctor of theology doctorate. In 1966 he made his profession .

He was President (1970/90) and President Emeritus (1990/94) of the College of the Holy Cross in Worcester, founded in 1843, his alma mater. from 1963 he was a member of the Faculty of Theology, owner of the Loyola professor for humanities and dean (1968/70) and vice-president. In 1994 he retired.

In 1972 he pushed through the admission of female students. In 1986, he founded the Patriot League student sports league with Bucknell , Colgate , Lafayette and Lehigh colleges . He founded the college's own art gallery (1983) and the concert hall. Among other things, he was President of the New England Association of Schools and Colleges .

Awards

Brooks has received numerous awards for his commitment, including an honorary doctorate in literature from Holy Cross (1994) and honorary doctorates from St. Ambrose College , Worcester Polytechnic Institute , St. Anselm College , Assumption College , Anna Maria College and the University of New England .
