John E. Walsh (statistician)

John Edward Walsh (born  May 28, 1919 in Grand Junction, Colorado , †  August 24, 1972 in Dublin ) was an American statistician who was a professor at Southern Methodist University from 1967 until his death . He published a three-volume compendium with the title "Handbook of Nonparametric Statistics" and described, among other things, the outlier test named after Walsh .

Life

Born in Grand Junction in 1919, John E. Walsh studied mathematics at the University of Notre Dame , where he received a BS degree in 1941 . Three years later he earned an MA from the University of California, Los Angeles , and received his PhD from Princeton University in 1947 . He then worked for various companies and institutions such as the Lockheed Aircraft Corporation , the Douglas Aircraft Company , the Rand Corporation , the United States Census Bureau , the Naval Ordnance Test Station and the System Development Corporation . From 1967 he worked as a professor of statistics at the Southern Methodist University in Dallas .

John E. Walsh published around 150 articles in scientific journals and between 1962 and 1968 under the title "Handbook of Nonparametric Statistics" in three volumes, a compendium on methods of parameter-free statistics . Both the American Statistical Association and the American Association for the Advancement of Science named him a Fellow . The outlier test after Walsh , which he described for the first time in 1950 , is named after him . He died in 1972 in Dublin , where he was attending a scientific conference, as a result of a heart attack .
