John H. Loudon

John Hugo Loudon (born June 27, 1905 in The Hague , Netherlands ; † February 4, 1996 in Haarlem , Netherlands) was chairman of the board of directors of the oil company Royal Dutch Shell from 1951 to 1965 .

Life

The son of the former Shell President Hugo Loudon joined the company in 1930 after studying law at the University of Utrecht and worked for a year in the oil fields on Lake Maracaibo in Venezuela until his wedding in London . The time of his rise in the company was marked by the reconstruction after the destruction of the Second World War . He was Chairman of the Royal Dutch Shell Group for fourteen years when it became one of the world's largest oil companies and guided it through times of turmoil in the Middle East and the Suez Crisis in 1956. He introduced and secured training programs for local workers Shell's influence despite growing Arab nationalism during the early 1960s.

As the power of the OPEC countries grew, Loudon used his friendships with the sheikhs and political leaders of the region to defend the interests of the Shell group.

He also had close friendships with business tycoons such as David Rockefeller and Henry Ford II .

After his resignation as CEO of the Shell oil company in 1965, he continued his engagement as its supervisory board chairman until 1976. He was a tall, athletic man who spoke five languages. He moved easily in the world of statesmen such as de Gaulle or the Shah of Persia .

When David Rockefeller, president of Chase Manhattan Bank , appointed an advisory board to advise the bank on its international affairs in 1965, he named Loudon chairman. Loudon was this until his retirement in 1977.

John H. Loudon was President of WWF International from 1976 to 1981 .

Loudon was married twice, most recently to Charlotte, b. van Sminia. With Marie, b. van Tuyll van Serooskerken, who died in 1988, he had three sons John, George and Frederick.

Honors

In addition to high Dutch orders, Loudon was named Knight Commander of the Order of the British Empire (KBE) in 1960 .
