John Heron-Maxwell, 4th Baronet

Sir John Shaw Heron-Maxwell, 4th Baronet ( June 29, 1772 - January 29, 1830 ), was a British nobleman , politician and military man.

He was the son of Sir William Maxwell, 3rd Baronet , from his marriage to Margaret Stewart, daughter of Sir Michael Stewart, 3rd Baronet.

He joined the British Army in 1788 as Ensign of the 68th Regiment of Foot . In 1791 he became Lieutenant of the 7th Foot and in 1794 Captain of the 23rd Light Dragoons . In the latter unit he became major in 1795 and Brevet - Lieutenant-Colonel in 1797 . From 1802 to 1814 he was under half pay . In 1805 he was promoted to Colonel of the 23rd Light Dragoons , in 1811 to Major-General and in 1819 to Lieutenant-General .

On January 4, 1802, he married Mary Heron, daughter and heir to MP Patrick Heron of Heron. When his father-in-law died in 1803, he added his family name to Heron-Maxwell as his general heir and inherited his lands including Kirroughtree House near Newton Stewart . He and his wife had twelve children:

When his father died on March 4, 1804, he inherited the title of Baronet , of Springkell in the County of Dumfries, as well as its lands including the family seat Springkell House in Dumfriesshire , which he had expanded considerably around 1818.

Thanks to the protection of his friend Charles Montagu-Scott, Lord Dalkeith , he managed to be elected to the House of Commons in the 1807 general election as a member of the constituency of Dumfries Burghs . In the next election in 1812 he was not re-elected.
