history

The mansion was built in 1734 for Sir William Maxwell, 2nd Baronet . Under his grandson Sir John Shaw Heron-Maxwell, 4th Baronet , the wings were added around 1818. Springkell House remained in family ownership until 1893. It was then sold to Sir Jabez Edward Johnson-Ferguson, 1st Baronet , who had the building extensively renovated. The work essentially extended to the interior, but the Georgian lattice windows were also replaced. The property is inherited within the family and can now be rented for festive purposes.

description

Springkell House is about a kilometer northeast of Eaglesfield off the east bank of the Kirtle Waters . The Palladian architecture is reminiscent of the recently designed by William Adam mansions House of Dun and Cumbernauld House . The north-facing front is five axes wide. A massive porte-cochère emerges in the middle . The flanking, protruding wings are four axes wide. Colossal Ionic pilasters carry a triangular gable on the seven-axis wide rear .

stables

The stables are located approximately 200 m northwest of Springkell House. They were built as a complex with several outer buildings around 1840. Together they form a U-shaped floor plan and thus enclose an elongated inner courtyard on three sides. For the masonry, sandstone hewn into blocks was mainly used. The elongated stables form the western end of the complex. A canopy on the remise on the north side is designed with cast iron columns. The inner courtyard is closed on the south side with a wall. Square cast-iron gate leaves close the driveway.

barn

The barn with attached residential building is located around 800 m west of the manor house. Two year stones with the dates 1755 and 1784 are embedded in the quarry stone masonry. The facades are whitewashed, with the bricked building openings being contrasted in color. The wide barn door closes with a pressed arch . A recent kennel adjoins the east side .

West Lodge

The West Lodge, also known as Palmersgill Lodge , dates back to the earlier 19th century, with the extension on the east side being more recent. The building is located approximately half a mile southwest of Springkell House near the village of Eaglesfield. It flanks the western access road to the manor house. The lodge is built into the embankment of the Kirtle Waters. The masonry consists of quarry stone, with the building openings being lined. On the southwest side occurs bow window halboktognal forth. The roof is covered with slate. The upstream gate along the way was built around 1880. Two higher goal posts delimit the driveway and are in turn surrounded by two smaller posts that flank the two footpaths. Ornate, cast-iron gates are hung on the posts.

East Lodge

Flanking the east access is the East Lodge, also Fairyknowe Lodge , around 1.1 km east of Springkell House. Like the West Lodge, the quarry stone structure dates back to the early 19th century. The south-facing front is five axes wide. The entrance area emerges in the middle with a hip . Four-part lattice windows are installed. The lodge closes with a slate roof. The design of the upstream gate approach largely corresponds to that of the West Lodge and also dates from the 1880s.
