John Hubert Macey Rodgers SM , CMG (born October 9, 1915 in Wallaceville, Upper Hutt , New Zealand , † January 10, 1997 ) was a Roman Catholic bishop .

Life

John Rodgers joined the order of the Marist Fathers in 1936 and was ordained a priest on December 15, 1940 .

Pope Pius XII appointed him on June 29, 1953 as Vicar Apostolic of the island of Tonga and at the same time titular Bishop of Sbida . The episcopal ordination donated him the coadjutor of Wellington , Thomas Peter McKeefry , on February 11, 1954 in St Mary of the Angels in Wellington; Co -consecrators were Archbishop James Michael Liston , Bishop of Auckland, and Edward Michael Joyce , Bishop of Christchurch . He attended the first, third and fourth sessions of the Second Vatican Council . With the elevation of the Apostolic Vicariate to a diocese by Paul VI. he became the first bishop of Tonga on June 21, 1966. After his abdication as diocesan bishop in 1972, he became titular bishop of Caput Cilla . Paul VI appointed him a year later. second bishop of Rarotonga . After his resignation he was appointed auxiliary bishop in Auckland on March 21, 1977 and appointed titular bishop of Nigizubi . In 1985 he went back to the mission and became second superior of the Mission sui juris Funafuti , but returned to Auckland a year later because of his health.
