action

About 100 years before Martin Luther published his 95 theses , the theologian Jan Hus lives in Bohemia , who also wants to bring about a change in church practice. Growing up in the countryside, he went to Prague as a teenager, studied there and then became a priest. In the meantime he has become a professor and rector of the University of Prague .

Hus, generally accepted, came into contact with the writings of John Wycliffe and began to express preformational thoughts. King Sigismund , who values Hus very much, is not averse to the idea, but already foresees a resistance and therefore admonishes Hus personally. Hus should not exaggerate his activities, because the status quo should be preserved. But Hus doesn't listen to him. He preaches to his parish in the Czech language because he wants people to really understand the Holy Scriptures. He preaches that God's mercy and salvation cannot be bought. Faith leads to the forgiveness of sins and not works. But not everyone is enthusiastic about his sermons. The official church becomes aware of him and therefore gives instructions that all churches in Prague must remain closed. Services can therefore no longer be held. Many Prague residents are appalled, they feel cut off from God. Hus then leaves Prague and goes back to the countryside in which he grew up.

One day Hus receives a message from his friend King Sigismund. A council is to take place in Constance . Hus come to defend his teachings there. Sigismund assures him safe conduct for the journey there and back. Hus wants to take the chance and speak to the council to convince the official church of his faith. Knowing that this project is dangerous, despite the insured protection from King Sigismund, he begins his journey. Before the council he wants to visit Cardinal Antonio and convince him. But his conversation with him is not successful. Cardinal Antonio considers Hu's teachings to be heresies and that Hus himself is a dangerous heretic. He immediately has Hus arrested. Soon afterwards Sigismund calls Cardinal Antonio to him. Hus is a successful preacher who attracts people, the king said. In a conversation that takes place in private, Cardinal Antonio replies that 23 articles have been formulated which prove that Hus is wrong. Antonio goes on to explain that if Sigismund were to protect a convicted heretic, he would be the devil and face the consequences. An excommunication would follow. Sigismund is intimidated and remains silent.

Cardinal Antonio presented the prisoner Hus with the choice of submitting himself to the coming council, that is, of revoking himself and hoping that he would be spared or that he would continue to represent his teachings, with the corresponding consequences. Hus does not revoke and so the public trial against him begins before the council. King Sigismund, although present, looks on, shaken and inactive. Hus is forbidden to speak, one has no interest in him defending himself. It is declared that Hus is a follower of Wyclif, and he is immediately classified by the decision-makers as a heretic . Cardinal Antonio reads out the following judgment. Hus and his books are to be burned.

Jan Hus is shocked and immediately accuses Antonio loudly. He said he had never read his books, his life's work, how could he judge that they were being burned. But the process is over. Hus will then take his chasuble in public. His priestly dignity should also be eliminated. Cardinal Antonio puts a cap on Hus, which is supposed to mark him as a heretic. Next, he's taken to the execution site. There he is asked again if he wants to withdraw. But even now Hus does not withdraw. He trusts in God. Singing of the grace of God, he is burned at the stake. Cardinal Antonio, King Sigismund and the people watch.
