John J. O'Connor (journalist)

John J. O'Connor (born July 10, 1933 in Bronx , New York City , † November 13, 2009 in Manhattan , New York City) was an American journalist and film critic .

Life

John J. O'Connor was one of four sons of two Irish immigrants, James O'Connor and Hannah Foley, both from County Kerry . He studied at the City College of New York and at Yale University . He began his journalistic career in 1959 with the Wall Street Journal , where he later became a theater and dance critic. From 1971 he worked for the New York Times , where he mainly wrote film reviews until 1997.

O'Connor lived with his partner Seymour Barofsky for over 47 years. Both adopted a child in the early 1980s who later died of malignant lymphoma at the age of seven . He himself died on November 13, 2009 at the age of 76, just four weeks after being diagnosed with lung cancer from the same disease.
