John MacNaught

John Watson MacNaught PC (born June 19, 1904 in Coleman , Prince Edward Island , † December 25, 1984 ) was a Canadian lawyer and politician of the Liberal Party of Canada , who was a member of the lower house for a few years and was a minister several times.

Life

After attending school, MacNaught completed a law degree and after completing this degree took up a job as a barrister .

In the general election of June 11, 1945 , he was elected as a candidate for the Liberal Party for the first time as a member of the lower house and represented the Prince electoral district until he was defeated in the election of June 10, 1957 . In June 1948 MacNaught took over his first government office and was Parliamentary Assistant to the Minister for Fisheries until April 1949. He held this office again from July 1949 to June 1953 and again between August 1953 and April 1957.

After he had run unsuccessfully in the Prince constituency for re-entry into the House of Commons in the election of March 31, 1958 , he was re-elected MP in the April 8, 1963 election in the Prince constituency, but lost his constituency in the next following general election on November 8, 1965 .

On April 22, 1963 he was appointed by Prime Minister Lester Pearson to the 19th Cabinet of Canada and was there both Solicitor General and Minister without Portfolio until July 6, 1965, when he was last Minister from July 7 to December 17, 1965 for mining and technical appraisal. During this time he was between February 18, 1964 and April 3, 1965 chairman of the House of Commons special committee for procedures and organization.

Most recently, MacNaught ran again in the election of July 8, 1974 in the Malpeque constituency for a seat in the House of Commons, but suffered another defeat and then withdrew from politics.
