John Michael Uhrich

John Michael Uhrich (born June 7, 1877 in Formosa , Bruce County , Ontario , † June 15, 1951 in Regina , Saskatchewan ) was a Canadian politician and doctor . He was Minister of Health of Saskatchewan for 16 years and Vice Governor of that province from 1948 to 1951 .

biography

Uhrich was a brief teacher in Walkerton and then studied medicine at Northwestern University in Chicago . During the semester break, he taught at schools in Saskatchewan. After graduating, he moved to this province and opened a doctor's office in Hague . As a candidate for the Saskatchewan Liberal Party , he entered the 1921 election to the Saskatchewan Legislative Assembly and was successful in the Rosthern constituency.

From 1922 Uhrich was provincial secretary in the cabinet of Charles Avery Dunning , from 1923 he was also Minister of Health. Under his leadership, the number of hospitals was increased. A special concern of his was the expansion of preventive medicine, which included the control of water and milk as well as vaccinations against diphtheria and smallpox . The provincial government also paid the costs of fighting tuberculosis .

Uhrich was re-elected in 1929, but lost his ministerial post because of the defeat of the Liberals. These came back to power five years later, after which he took over his previous office. From 1938 he also headed the Ministry for State Building Projects. He resigned in 1944 for health reasons. Governor General Lord Alexander swore in Uhrich on March 23, 1948 as Lieutenant Governor of Saskatchewan. He held this representative office until his death.
