Jack Wiebe

John Edward Neil ("Jack") Wiebe , SOM (born May 31, 1936 in Herbert , Saskatchewan , † April 16, 2007 ) was a Canadian politician and farmer . From 1994 to 2000 he was Lieutenant Governor of Saskatchewan Province, then a Senator until 2004 .

biography

Wiebe was the descendant of German-Russian Mennonites ; Both his grandfather and his father had been mayors of Herbert. He graduated from the University of Saskatchewan with a degree in agricultural science and built a large farm upon graduation. In addition, from 1970 to 1985 he was the owner and manager of the L&W Feeders Ltd feed factory . As a candidate for the Saskatchewan Liberal Party , Wiebe was successful in a 1971 by -election and represented the Morse constituency in the Saskatchewan Legislative Assembly . After being re-elected in 1975, he resigned in 1978.

Governor General Ray Hnatyshyn swore in Wiebe as Lieutenant Governor of Saskatchewan on May 31, 1994. He held this representative office until February 21, 2000. Only a few weeks later, on April 6, 2000, Prime Minister Jean Chrétien was appointed Senator . In the Senate, Wiebe was Deputy Chairman of the Agriculture and Forestry Commission. He resigned on January 31, 2004. In the years that followed, he ran a fundraising campaign to equip a new regional hospital in Swift Current .
