George Porteous

George Porteous , CM , MBE (born April 7, 1903 in Douglas , South Lanarkshire , Scotland , † February 6, 1978 in Regina ) was a Canadian social worker . From 1976 to 1978 he was Lieutenant Governor of Saskatchewan Province.

biography

Porteous immigrated to Canada when he was young. He graduated from the University of Saskatchewan , worked for the YMCA and eventually became an instructor in the Canadian Army. In 1941 he was sent to Hong Kong with the Winnipeg Grenadiers to strengthen the British garrison there. Shortly after, he got in the Japanese occupation of Hong Kong in captivity and spent the rest of the war in prison camps. He was awarded the Order of the British Empire for his services to raise morale .

After returning to Saskatoon, Porteous was elected director of the Saskatoon Community Chest fundraising organization, which supports local charity projects. In 1974 he received the Order of Canada for his charitable activities . Governor General Jules Léger swore him in on March 3, 1976 as Lieutenant Governor of Saskatchewan. He held this representative office until his death.
