John Murtaugh

John E. Murtaugh (born October 30, 1927 in Minneapolis , † 2017 ) was an American jazz musician ( tenor saxophone , arrangement , composition ).

Live and act

Murtaugh worked in the New York music scene as a musician, arranger or composer from the early 1950s with Jackie Paris , Urbie Green ( Urbie Green Sextet , Blue Note , 1954), Les Elgart ("Harlem Nocturne"), Hubert Laws , Les McCann , Benny Goodman , Dizzy Gillespie , Eddie Higgins , Bobby Scott ( Bobby Scott and Two Horns , 1956), and Grady Tate ("Movin 'Day," with Spencer Michlin). In 1970 he published his only album under his own name, the fusion-oriented production Blues Current ( Polydor ), on which Murtaugh also played Moog synthesizers and on which Herbie Hancock , Gerald Jemmott (bass) and Bernard Purdie had participated. "Easy Going" is one of his other compositions. At the session of the singer Marion Williams with the John Murtaugh Orchestra in 1971 a. a. also involved Keith Jarrett , Willie Bobo and Bernard Purdie . In the field of jazz he was involved in 17 recording sessions between 1952 and 1971. In later years, he ran the music production company Grant and Murtaugh Productions with Hal Grant . a. worked for Mel Lewis .
