The Civil Wars were an American country folk duo from Nashville that had a number one album in their career and won four Grammy Awards .

biography

Civil Wars consisted of Alabama-born singer and guitarist John Paul White and singer Joy Williams. The Californian already had some successes in the field of Christian pop music with several solo albums in the mid-2000s . They met in Nashville in 2008 while working on songwriting for other artists. In 2009 the two released their first live album Live at Eddie's Attic , a recording of an appearance in Eddie's Attic , Decatur , as a free download. Her first EP Poison & Wine followed later . The theme song was used in an episode of Grey's Anatomy . The following year they recorded their debut album with well-known producer Charlie Peacock.

Barton Hollow was released in early 2011 and immediately gave the duo their breakthrough. It debuted at number 12 on the Billboard 200 and was at number 1 on the download charts. At the Grammy Awards in 2012 , it was awarded as the best folk album. Williams and White received a second trophy for the title song for best country performance. The two also sang live at the award event.

In 2011 the duo appeared as the opening act for the British singer Adele on her tour for album 21 . The following year they had the single hit Safe & Sound with country singer Taylor Swift . They received their third Grammy Award in 2013 in the category 'Best Song Written For Visual Media' for the song Safe & Sound , which was also nominated for a Golden Globe.

Their second album with the band name as the title was released in summer 2013. It reached number one in the US charts and was also able to place in the charts in Germany and Switzerland, among other places. The two musicians received their fourth Grammy in 2014 for the song From This Valley from the album.

Even before the album was released, the two musicians had announced an indefinite break, and at the beginning of August 2014 both announced that they would finally break up as a duo. The reason was irreconcilable differences of opinion that were not explained in more detail.
