John Petre, 1st Baron Petre (born December 20, 1549 - October 11, 1613 in Thorndon Hall ) was an English nobleman and politician.

origin

John Petre was the third but eldest surviving son of Sir William Petre and his second wife Anne Browne. His father had risen from the son of a passed pawn to an influential civil servant and politician. John Petre studied at the Middle Temple in London in 1567 .

Ascent to the baron

After his father's death in 1572, Petre inherited his extensive land holdings, mainly in Devon and Essex , and the Ingatestone Hall estate . In 1574 he was able to complete the acquisition of the Thorndon Hall estate in Essex, which his father had already started. As a major landowner, Petre soon served on various local committees. From 1573 he was justice of the peace and from 1575 to 1576 he served as sheriff of Essex. In 1576 he was knighted. In 1595 his annual income was £ 4280, of which about £ 2900 came from his estates in Essex. In the general election in 1584 and 1586 he was elected as Knight of the Shire for Essex. He was active on several committees in the House of Commons . Although his mother and his wife were Catholic, he made the supremacy and was little changed against Queen Elizabeth I. loyal. In the 1588 general election in Essex, Petre did not run again, also not in 1593. From 1590 he was Deputy Lieutenant of Essex, and in 1597 he succeeded in getting his eldest son William to be elected Knight of the Shire. After the death of Elizabeth I, her successor James I raised him to Baron Petre on July 21, 1603 , making him a member of the House of Lords . As a result, he was hardly politically active, perhaps this was also the result of an illness. In 1610 he took part in the installation of the heir to the throne Henry as Prince of Wales , also in 1612 in his funeral. Petre was buried in the parish church of Ingatestone after his death .

Family and offspring

On April 17, 1570, Petre had married Mary Waldegrave († 1604), the eldest daughter of Sir Edward Waldegrave and his wife Frances Nevill from Borley . He had several children with her, including:
