John Richard Gregg (born September 6, 1954 in Linton , Indiana ) is an American politician of the Democratic Party . From 1987 to 2003 he was a member of the Indiana House of Representatives , of which he had been its spokesman since 1996 . In 2012 he was his party's candidate for governor . For the 2016 gubernatorial election he ran again for the Democrats.

Life

Gregg, who has two other brothers, grew up in simple circumstances. His father worked in construction. In 1976 Gregg earned a university degree in Political Science and History , Public Administration and 1984 in Law . He later worked in the private sector at Peabody Energy , where he was responsible for public relations. In 1985 he left the company and worked as a lawyer .

Even in his youth, Gregg showed political interest and was involved in the Democratic Party . For the presidential elections in 1992 , 1996 and 2008 he was a delegate to the Democratic National Convention . In 1986 he successfully ran for a seat in the Indiana House of Representatives and was able to defeat the Republican incumbent. He took up his new mandate as MP for the 45th District in January 1987. It was confirmed every two years up to and including the year 2000. In November 1996 Gregg was elected speaker and thus chairman of the Chamber of Parliament. His election was the result of a non-partisan compromise, with both Democrats and Republicans holding 50 seats. In 1998 the Democrats regained a majority of seats and Gregg remained the House Speaker until he left in early 2003. During his tenure in the State Legislature , he advocated moderate tax cuts for middle income and was an advocate of balanced budgets . He also campaigned for educational reforms and more rights for workers. As a spokesman, he also enforced a smoking ban on Parliament's premises.

Gregg during a 2012 political discussion

For the 2002 elections Gregg decided not to run again and resigned from parliament in January of the following year. He was then interim president of Vincennes University until 2004 . Then he worked again as a lawyer. In 2008, he supported Hillary Clinton's presidential candidacy .

For the 2012 Indiana gubernatorial election, Gregg announced his application for the highest office in the state. His party nominated unanimously in spring 2012 because there were no other candidates. As a running mate , he selected the State Senator Vi Simpson . In the election on November 6, 2012, however, he was defeated by Republican Congressman Mike Pence in a narrow decision. While Gregg received 46% of the vote, 49% were in favor of pence. However, Gregg received a higher share of the vote in Indiana than US President Barack Obama during the parallel presidential election .

In 2015 Gregg announced that he would run again in the 2016 gubernatorial election. Although there were other Democratic candidates, Gregg was unanimously nominated again in May after their withdrawal. As Running Mate acts Christina Hale , a Member of the House of Representatives from Indiana. Originally, his Republican opponent would have been Mike Pence again, but he withdrew his application in July 2016 after the Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump selected him as his vice-presidential candidate for the presidential election. The Republican party executive then designated Lieutenant Governor Eric Holcomb to replace Pence. Polls predict that the election on November 8, 2016 will be a close race. Most recently, however, Gregg was clearly leading a poll in October. In his election campaign, Gregg advocates better financing of infrastructure and reforms in the education system. He would like to achieve equal pay for women and men through an equal pay law. He is also in favor of a reform of the electoral law : Among other things, he would like to simplify the registration of voters and keep polling stations open longer in order to increase voter turnout. Gregg is also aiming for constituency reform to prevent so-called gerrymandering .

On election day Gregg had to admit defeat again, even if he again won significantly more votes in Indiana than the Democratic presidential candidate Hillary Clinton.
