John Shum Kin-Fun ( Chinese  岑建勳 , Pinyin Cén Jiànxūn , Jyutping Sam 4 Gin 3 fan 1 ; * 1952 ) is a Chinese actor and film producer from Hong Kong . His English name is sometimes spelled John Sham . While he is primarily known for his comedic acting roles, he also spent some time as a political activist .

Life

Shum graduated from the University of Hong Kong . He took up further studies in Great Britain and the United States. After returning to Hong Kong, he co-founded a local city magazine and worked there as an editor. At the same time he started working on television and radio.

He was a student activist in the 1970s and was a member of the Trotskyist Party in the Revolutionary Marxist League.

In 1983 he founded the film production company D & B Films with Sammo Hung and Dickson Poon . He later started a second film company with John Chan, Maverick Films Ltd.

Shum's most productive period as an actor was in the 1980s. He starred in 49 films, 33 of which were made in that decade. His best-known appearances were in the Lucky Stars films, in Winners & Sinners (1983) and Twinkle, Twinkle Lucky Stars (1985). With fellow actor and comedian Richard Ng he played the lead role in the film series Pom Pom (1984–1986).

Shum's career as a producer spans more than 20 films, including a. "Hong Kong 1941" (1984) with Chow Yun Fat , "Legacy of Rage" (1986) by Ronny Yu and the benefit film "The Banquet" (1991), which was made in the context of a national catastrophe. In 1987 he worked as an assistant director on the Michelle Yeoh film "Magnificent Warriors".

Due to his participation in the pro-democracy movement in Hong Kong in the 1990s, he was no longer noticed by the film industry.

Private

Shum was married three times: from 1970 to 1975 he was married to Au Yim-cheung. Tina Lau became his partner from 1984 to 1988 and his last partner was Shallin Tse from 1991 to 2005.
