action

Ah Tao worked in the Leung family home for over 60 years. Of the family, only their son, the film producer Roger, lives in Hong Kong . When Ah Tao can no longer work after a stroke , she moves to a nursing home at her own request. Roger visits her there as often as he can. His search for a new housekeeper is difficult. Ah Tao makes the acquaintance of Aunt Kam and her disabled daughter in the home, and she meets Uncle Kin, who keeps scooping up small amounts to get them through with prostitutes. Roger receives a visit from three former classmates. They happened to find the last meal Ah Tao prepared in the freezer. As they eat them, they remember all the good things that Ah Tao used to cook for them after school. You call them at home, and Ah Tao still knows each of them by name. The Leung family want to set up a rental apartment for Ah Tao, but Ah Tao dies. In a conversation between Rogers and his sister Sharon, it becomes clear what an important role Ah Tao also played in her life.

background

Tao Jie - A Simple Life is based on the True Story of producer and co-author Roger Lee and his housekeeper.

criticism

At Zeit.de , Ursula März wrote: “A simple life relates to the character of the main female character. But it also affects the completely unspectacular nature of this film, which depicts nothing other than the simple craft of life. In every picture, the people are integrated into the world of everyday things, embedded in the processes of everyday activities, which makes a decisive contribution to the naturalness of the story that Ann Hui tells here. "

Patrick Seyboth from epd-film.de found the film to be “as quiet, modest and simple as its main character.” “Deannie Yip and Andy Lau [...] embody these two people with wonderful naturalness, who are so different and yet at some point how mother and son act. The pictures of the episodic narrative are as simple and clear as their representations. Even dramatic twists and turns are placed in the picture casually or completely left out. " Telling Tao Jie more tightly would allow the narration to focus in places. But the fact that he is far from aiming for direct emotional sales through dramaturgical condensation is precisely what defines a quality of the film that is not only rare in Hong Kong cinema. He is so devoid of vanity and looks at his characters and their world with such an open eye that it could almost be described as extravagance again. "

For the Süddeutsche Zeitung , the film embodies “history [and] the relief of philosophical wisdom. Being there for others, first the job description of the maid Tao Jie, becomes recognizable as tender care and ultimately as the essence of a successful life. "

Other critics only said briefly: “A beautiful and unsentimental film about the autumn of life” or: “A simple life. A simple movie. A great film. "
