John Shirley (film editor)

John Shirley (* 1922 in London ) is a British film editor who has been responsible for editing around 50 cinema and television film productions during his career . Including classics of British cinema such as Defying All Violence , Doctor Faustus , Tschitti Tschitti Bang Bang , Zeppelin or James Bond 007 - Live and Let Die .

life and career

Shirley began his career as an editor in the early 1950s with cinema productions such as Crime Without Guilt (1951), The Red Spear (1953) or Me and the Minister (1955). For the later James Bond director Lewis Gilbert he oversaw the 1956 war film against all violence with Kenneth More in the lead role. Between 1959 and 1962 he worked for the director Gerald Thomas as editor for various productions of the popular English comedy series Carry on (also known under the German TV title - Ist ja crazy ...) for Ist ja crazy - Lauter lovable teachers ( 1959), Not so great, sweetie (1961), It's crazy - our torpedo is coming back or It's crazy - the ship's cook is seasick .

In the mid-1968s, Shirley then turned more to the genre of drama and the genre of action and adventure films. His montage work resulted in films such as The Seventh Dawn (1964), Doctor Faustus (1967), The Red Tent (1969), The Murderer Ship (1971) and Zeppelin ; the latter two each for the director Etienne Périer . In 1973 and 1974, he supported fellow editors in their work for Guy Hamilton's directorial work on the two 007 productions James Bond 007 - Live and Let Die and James Bond 007 - The Man with the Golden Gun . At the beginning of the 1980s he was in charge of the biographical film adaptation of Omar Mukhtar - Lion of the Desert , directed by Moustapha Akkad . In 1983 and 1985 two more adventure films followed with Pirate Island with Tommy Lee Jones and Quatermain - In search of the treasure of the kings with Richard Chamberlain and Sharon Stone in the leading roles.

Between the early 1980s and 1990s, John Shirley also worked for various British television films such as the Rudyard Kipling adaptation of Kim with Peter O'Toole , Wolves Never Hunt Alone or the Robert Louis Stevensons film adaptation Jekyll and Hyde with Michael Caine .
