John Stewart-Murray, 7th Duke of Atholl

John James Hugh Henry Stewart-Murray, 7th Duke of Atholl ( August 6, 1840 - January 20, 1917 ) was a British peer , military and politician.

He was the only child of George Murray, 6th Duke of Atholl from his marriage to Anne Home-Drummond, daughter of Henry Home-Drummond, 7th Laird of Blair Drummond . On December 1, 1865, he added his family name Murray to Stewart-Murray by deed poll .

He attended Eton College from 1853 to 1856 and then entered the British Army . He served in the Scots Fusilier Guards and was promoted to lieutenant in 1859 and captain in 1864 .

When his father died on January 16, 1864, he inherited his extensive estates, including the family seat of Blair Castle , the Duke of Atholl title and other subordinate titles and the associated seat in the House of Lords , as well as the dignity of Chief of Clan Murray .

In the childless death of his maternal great-uncle Algernon Percy, 4th Duke of Northumberland , he inherited the title of 6th Baron Percy on February 12, 1865 .

In 1868 he was made Knight Companion of the Thistle Order and in 1878 he was appointed Lord Lieutenant of Perthshire .

He married on October 29, 1863 in Moncreiffe House in Perthshire Louisa Moncreiffe (1844-1902), daughter of Sir Thomas Moncreiffe, 7th Baronet. With her he had seven children:

When he died in 1917, his son John George inherited him as the 8th Duke.
