John Twomey (sailor)

John Twomey (born July 7, 1955 in Cork ) is an Irish sailor and former discus thrower and took part in these sports several times in the Paralympic Games .

Twomey was an avid cyclist in his youth. After a bicycle accident in 1970 in which he suffered a T3 injury, he was dependent on a wheelchair and now, after his recovery, turned to disabled sports . Twomey took the first time in 1976 as a discus thrower at the Paralympic Games in Toronto in part. In his third Paralympic participation in England in 1984 , he managed to win a bronze medal. Even four years later in Seoul Twomey won a medal, this time gold.

After sailing became a Paralympic discipline in 1996 , Twomey switched from athletics to this sport and competed in 2000 and 2004 . At the Paralympic Games in Beijing in 2008 he was registered in a two-man keelboat . In 2012 in London he was skipper in the sonar boat class . Anthony Hegarty and Ian Costelloe formed the team.

Through his continuous participation in the Paralympic Games since 1976, he is the Irish athlete with the most participations in the Olympic and Paralympic Games for Ireland.
