John Vincent McCanny

John Vincent McCanny (born June 25, 1952 ) is the Regius Professor of Electronics and Computer Engineering at Queen's University Belfast . There he is director of the Institute of Electronics, Communications and Information Technology .

Career

After a BSc from the University of Manchester (1973), McCanny moved to the University of Ulster , where he received his PhD in solid-state physics in 1978 . In 1998 a D.Sc. in Electrical Engineering from Queen's University. It was McCanny's idea to set up the Institute for Electronics Communication and Information Technology (ECIT) in Northern Ireland, a £ 40m funded institute. From 1979 to 1984 he worked in Malvern in the Royal Signals and Radar Establishment , now QinetiQ, as Principal Scientific Officer. In 1984 he moved to Queens University, which in 1984 was one of the best universities in the British Isles in the field of electrical engineering. In 1988 he became the UK's youngest professor of electrical engineering. He used his immense experience in digital signal processing in his work and research.

In addition to teaching and researching at the university, McCanny also serves as Chief Technology Officer of Amphion Semiconductor Inc., a company that McCanny was one of the founders in 1994. He also works in the same role for Integrated Silicon Systems. He is a board member of various companies. Because of his experience, McCanny led various working groups at the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE).

honors and awards

McCanny has been a Fellow of the Royal Academy of Engineering since 1995 . In 1996 McCanny was awarded the British Academy Silver Medal for "Outstanding and Demonstrated Personal Contributions" that made Britain a leader in digital signal processing. In 1999 he was elected a Fellow of the IEEE. In 2000 he became a member of the Royal Irish Academy . In 2002 he became a Fellow of the Royal Society . In 2003 the Royal Dublin Society awarded him the Boyle Medal. In 2004 he was appointed Commander of the Order of the British Empire (CBE). In 2006, the Faraday Medal of the Institution of Engineering and Technology followed . In 2011 the Cunningham Medal of the Royal Irish Academy followed. In 2017 Queen Elizabeth II raised McCanny to the nobility for his achievements and services in academic teaching and economic development .
