John Wendell Holmes

John Wendell Holmes (born June 18, 1910 in London , Ontario , † August 13, 1988 ) was a Canadian ambassador .

Life

Holmes holds a Masters of Arts degree from the University of Western Ontario and the University of Toronto . From 1933 to 1938 he studied for a Masters in English at Pickering College. From 1938 to 1940 he attended the University of London . Holmes joined the Foreign Service in 1943 and became Assistant Under-Secretary of State in the Foreign Office in 1953. Wendell retired in 1960 and headed the Canadian Institute of International Affairs think tank from 1960 to 1973 .

From 1959, Holmes was among the hunted by an intense prosecution of homophobic criminal laws by the Royal Canadian Mounted Police . Lawmen’s keen interest in sexual orientation has ruined lives, families and careers.

From 1971 to 1981 Holmes was Professor of International Relations at York University , Glendon College. From 1967 until his death he was visiting professor of international relations at the University of Toronto. He was visiting professor of history at the University of Leeds in 1979 and 1985 .

In 1969 Holmes became an officer in the Order of Canada , became a Fellow of the Royal Society of Canada, and received 10 honorary doctorates.
