John Woods (politician, 1761)

John Woods (born 1761 in Bedford , Bedford County , Province of Pennsylvania , †  December 16, 1816 in Brunswick County , Virginia ) was an American politician . In 1815 and 1816 he represented the state of Pennsylvania in the US House of Representatives .

Career

John Woods was the older brother of Congressman Henry Woods (1764-1826). After studying law and being admitted to the bar in 1783, he began to work in this profession in Pennsylvania. In 1784 he was also involved in planning the development of the city of Pittsburgh . Politically, he became a member of the Federalist Party founded by Alexander Hamilton in the late 1790s . In 1797 he was a member of the Pennsylvania Senate .

In the congressional election of 1814 Woods was elected to the United States House of Representatives in Washington, DC in the 14th  constituency of Pennsylvania , where he succeeded Adamson Tannehill on March 4, 1815 . However, due to illness, he was unable to attend the meetings of the congress . At the end of 1816 he went on a vacation trip to the south, on which he died on December 16 of that year in Virginia.

His Pittsburgh home is listed as John Woods House on the National Register of Historic Places .
