Jolanta Szymanek-Deresz

Jolanta Dorota Szymanek-Deresz (born July 12, 1954 in Przedbórz , † April 10, 2010 in Smolensk ) was a Polish politician , lawyer , member of the Sejm in the V. and VI . Election term and former head of the presidential office under Aleksander Kwaśniewski .

Life

Szymanek-Deresz came from a family of lawyers; her father Tadeusz Szymanek was a judge at the Supreme Court ( Polish Sąd Najwyższy ) and chairman of the Chamber for Labor and Social Security Law there. First she studied at the University of Łódź , but after two years she moved to the University of Warsaw . In 1977 she graduated from the Faculty of Law and Administration of the University of Warsaw. After her legal clerkship, she worked as a judge at the Sąd Rejonowy (Regional Court) in Warsaw . In 1987 Szymanek-Deresz passed the bar exam and started working in a law firm. Since 1979 she belonged to the Polska Zjednoczona Partia Robotnicza (Polish United Workers' Party - PZPR).

At the. On January 3, 2000, Szymanek-Deresz became Undersecretary of State in the Presidential Chancellery, and on June 13, she became head of that agency. On December 23, 2000, she was reappointed to this position, which she held until October 18, 2005. In the parliamentary elections in 2005 she was elected to the Sejm for the first time as a member of the Płock constituency via the SLD's list. In the 2007 elections she was elected for the second time with 20,536 votes, this time on the list of Lewica i Demokraci (Left and Democrats - LiD). Szymanek-Deresz was Deputy Chairwoman of the Sejm Commission for Foreign Affairs and a member of the Commission for Constitutional Responsibility. From April 22, 2008 she was a member of the newly founded Lewica parliamentary group . On June 1, 2008, she was elected Deputy Chairwoman of the SLD.

On April 10, 2010, Szymanek-Deresz was part of a Polish delegation headed by President Lech Kaczyński , who was to travel to the memorial in Russia on the occasion of the 70th anniversary of the Katyn massacre . In a plane crash of the delegation near the Smolensk-Nord military airfield , however, she and other high-ranking representatives of Poland were killed.

Posthumously Szymanek-Deresz was awarded the Commander's Cross with Star of the Order Polonia Restituta (Krzyż Komandorski z Gwiazdą Orderu Odrodzenia Polski) on April 16, 2010 .
