history

The first written mention of the place is in the Gniezno bull ( bulla gnieźnieńska ) from 1136. The second mention took place in 1145. The place was initially protected by wooden structures, later a brick castle was built. In 1370 the place received city rights . In 1405, after a great fire, the town charter was renewed by the Polish king Władysław II Jagiełło and established by Magdeburg law . During the Great Northern War , the city was burned down by Swedish troops in 1655, but then rebuilt. Through the third partition of Poland , the place came to Austria in 1795 and to the Duchy of Warsaw in 1809 , from 1815 to the Russian-dominated Congress Poland . In the 1820s, a German-Protestant community of workers from the local cloth factory was established in Przedbórz, and from 1857 a branch community of Kielce . After the end of the First World War and the re-establishment of the state of Poland, Przedbórz also became Polish again. In September 1939 the city was occupied by the Wehrmacht . At the beginning of the Second World War the population was still around 7,000. In 1945 the number was roughly halved, and almost the entire Jewish population was deported and murdered. About 70 percent of the city was destroyed at the end of the war. Through an administrative reform in 1975 the city came to the newly formed Piotrków Voivodeship . After its dissolution, Przedbórz was part of the Łódź Voivodeship from 1999.
