Jon-Allan Butterworth , MBE (born February 6, 1986 in Sutton Coldfield ) is a British track cyclist . He starts in the paracycling category C5.
Athletic career
Jon-Allan Butterworth served in the Royal Air Force since 2002 . On August 4, 2007, he lost his left arm in a rocket attack on Basra Airport in Iraq . Butterworth got into cycling through the Battle Back program , which aims to help wounded soldiers return to active life. He participated in competitive races and was selected for the Para-Cycling Talent Program in 2009 .
In 2011 Butterworth took part in the World Track Championships for the first time and won the gold medal in the C5 class in the 1000 meter time trial in a new world record. The following year he succeeded again at the World Championships in Los Angeles . At the 2012 Summer Paralympics , he won three silver medals, in the time trial, in the single pursuit and in the team sprint . A fall during training prevented him from starting in road races .
At the 2014 UCI Paracycling World Track Championships , Butterworth won silver in the 1000-meter time trial and bronze in the single pursuit . Two years later, at the 2016 World Track Championships in Montichiari , he became world champion in the mixed team sprint together with Louis Rolfe and Jody Cundy , and silver in the 1000-meter time trial.
In 2016 Jon-Allan Butterworth won the gold medal in the team sprint at the Paralympics in Rio de Janeiro together with Rolfe and Cundy.
