Jon Andrew McBride (born August 14, 1943 in Charleston , West Virginia ) is a retired American astronaut .
education
McBride studied at West Virginia University from 1960 to 1964 and received a bachelor's degree in aerospace engineering from the Naval Postgraduate School in 1971 .
In 1965 McBride joined the United States Navy and was trained as a naval aviator. During the Vietnam War he flew 64 combat missions. At Edwards Air Force Base , he completed training as a test pilot. He holds a commercial pilot license and has already worked as a pilot instructor.
Astronaut activity
In January 1978, McBride was selected by NASA as an astronaut candidate. He was an observation pilot for the first shuttle mission STS-1 , he checked software in the Shuttle Avionics Integration Laboratory (SAIL), he was the liaison officer ( CAPCOM ) for the missions STS-5 , STS-6 and STS-7 and also worked as a so-called Flight Data File (FDF) Manager.
In July 1987, McBride moved to NASA headquarters to coordinate NASA relations with the United States Congress . In 1988 he was appointed as commander for the STS-35 mission , which was to take place in March 1990; However, McBride left NASA in May 1989.
STS-41-G
On October 5, 1984, McBride started as a pilot of the space shuttle Challenger on its first mission ( STS-41-G ) into space . In addition to the Earth Radiation Budget Satellite, a large number of experiments were carried out.
STS-61-E
This mission with the space shuttle Columbia should have brought the ASTRO-1 Spacelab mission into space on March 6, 1986. The flight was canceled after the Challenger disaster. The team would have consisted of Jon McBride, Richard Richards , David Leestma , Jeffrey Hoffman , Robert Parker , Samuel Durrance and Ronald Parise .
STS-71-A
This mission with the space shuttle Atlantis should have brought the ASTRO-2 Spacelab mission into space on January 12, 1987. The flight was canceled after the Challenger disaster. In May 1989, McBride became President and CEO of the Flying Eagle Corporation in Lewisburg . In 1996 he ran for the Republican nomination for governor of West Virginia , but lost in the primary of his party to Cecil H. Underwood . In September 1998 he moved to the Image Development Group in his native Charleston.
