Jon Whiteley

Jon Whiteley (born February 19, 1945 in Monymusk , Aberdeenshire , Scotland , † May 19, 2020 ) was a Scottish art historian and child actor .

Life

Jon Whiteley was born in Monymusk in 1945, the son of an elementary school principal. From an early age he was on stage in the school theater and thus drew the attention of Julian Wintle , the film producer of Ein Kind was witness, in 1951 .

Although Whiteley's parents were strict and initially only wanted to see their son as an actor in front of the camera, they allowed the boy to participate in other film productions. So it came about that Whiteley was allowed to stand in front of the camera in 1953 in Vanquished Hatred and in 1955 was honored with the Juvenile Award , an award that is equivalent to the Oscar . In the film, Whiteley and Vincent Winter , who also received the Juvenile Award, were seen as an orphaned siblings who discover a foundling and take care of it. Whiteley was in front of the camera for five movies until 1956, including Fritz Lang's historical adventure The Castle in the Shadow . He then played guest roles in two television series, but eventually left acting and concentrated entirely on his schooling.

He attended Oxford University , where he studied art history and received his doctorate in 1972 with the thesis "The Revival in Painting of Themes Inspired by Antiquity in Mid-nineteenth Century France". He worked as a curator and teacher at the Ashmolean Museum in Oxford for a total of 38 years and was also a Fellow of St Cross College , Oxford. Whiteley was married to art historian Linda Whiteley and the couple have two children. In 2009 he was awarded the French Ordre des Arts et des Lettres .
