life and work

Jonas Rothlaender grew up as the oldest of seven children. After graduating from high school in 2003, he made his first short films and worked as an assistant director on various film productions. From 2007 to 2015 he studied directing at the German Film and Television Academy Berlin (DFFB) .

His 6-minute student film The Shirt was included in the short film program Next Generation Short Tiger 2011 and was screened at numerous international festivals such as Cannes , Madrid, Buenos Aires, Paris, Moscow and New York.

With his first long documentary, Familie haben , Jonas Rothlaender provided an intimate glimpse into his complex family history, which was marked by deep rifts. His grandparents, his mother and himself are the main protagonists. The film won the jury award of the Univerciné Cinéma Allemand festival in Nantes in 2015 and was released in German cinemas on January 7, 2016.

For his feature film debut Fado , a love and jealousy drama in Lisbon , Rothlaender received the film award of the Saarland Prime Minister for best director at the Max Ophüls film festival in 2016 . The film also won the director's award at the Achtung Berlin film festival , the award for the best feature film at the Sehsuchten student film festival in Potsdam-Babelsberg, and the German film critic's award for the best feature film debut. The jury justified the latter award as follows:

“Jonas Rothlaender's first full-length film“ Fado ”is the psychogram of a jealous person, the approach to a feeling - precise, emotional and quite ingenious, a very mature debut: Reality and a surreal world of thought are skilfully intertwined, the actors are very confidently guided, every sentence , every scene, every metaphor is right. "

- Julia Teichmann : Excerpt from the laudation at the award ceremony on February 13, 2017.

In 2016 Jonas Rothlaender designed a 54-minute radio feature for SWR 2 : Imported Husbands , a documentary portrait about men who ended up in Finland because of love . In 2018 Rothlaender also realized his first radio play for SWR 2 : Satomi's Secret , with Hans Löw , Joy Maria Bai , Luise Heyer , Lily Kottkamp and Lars Rudolph in the leading roles. The idea for the German-Japanese story about the attempts to resuscitate a childhood sweetheart came about during a scholarship from Rothlaender in the Villa Kamogawa of the Goethe Institute in Kyoto , Japan . The first broadcast of the 79-minute radio play took place on January 7, 2018 on SWR 2.
