Jonathan Hugh Mance, Baron Mance , PC (born June 6, 1943 in Godalming , Surrey ) is a British lawyer and former judge of the Supreme Court of the United Kingdom .

life and career

Mance was born on June 6, 1943, one of four children to Sir Henry Mance , a prominent figure on Lloyd's Register . Like his father, he attended Charterhouse School , a boarding school in Godalming , Surrey . He then studied at University College, Oxford and was admitted to the Middle Temple Bar in 1965 .

From 1988 to 1994 he was director of the Bar Mutual Indemnity Fund Ltd . From 2000 to 2002 Mance was President of the British Insurance Law Association , previously from 1998 to 2000 Vice President ( Deputy President ). From 1992 to 1993 he was Chairman ( Chairman ) of various banking Appeal Tribunal. From 2000 to 2003 he was chairman of the Consultative Council of European Judges . Since 2000 he is Chairman ( Chairman ) of the Bar of the Lawn Tennis Society . Since 2009 he has been Chair of the International Law Association at Lord Chancellor's Advisory Committee in Private International law .

He was a member of the Council of Europe's Consultative Council of Judges as a UK Representative Judge . Since 2009 he has been chairman of the British-German Jurists Association .

Justice career

In 1982 he became a Crown Attorney , in 1989 Bencher and in 1990 Recorder . In 1993 he was appointed Judge of the Queen's Bench Division of the High Court of Justice and received the title of Knight Bachelor . In 1999 he was appointed a member of the Privy Council and a member of the Court of Appeal , first as Lord Justice of Appeal and from 2005 to 2009 as Lord of Appeal in Ordinary . From 2009 to 2018 he was a Justice of the United Kingdom Supreme Court.

Membership in the House of Lords

On October 3, 2005, he was appointed Lord of Appeal in Ordinary and Life Peer as Baron Mance, of Frognal in the London Borough of Camden . On October 1, 2009, he and nine other Lords of Appeal became judges of the new Supreme Court. He was thus automatically excluded from voting and participating in the House of Lords.

After retiring as a Supreme Court judge, Mance can once again participate in the parliamentary work of the House of Lords. He has been a member of the Conduct Committee since 2019.

Honors

From 2003 to 2011 Mance representative was the United Kingdom in the Trusteeship Council ( Board of Trustees ) of the Academy of European Law in Trier . In 2006 he became an Honorary Fellow of the University College of the University of Oxford .

He is married to Dame Mary Arden , currently Lord Justice of Appeal ; they are the first couple to ever sit on the Court of Appeal . They have two daughters and one son. His hobbies include tennis , languages ​​and music.
