Jools Holland's Big Band Rhythm & Blues is an album that Jools Holland & His Rhythm & Blues Orchestra released on Rhino Records in 2002 with the support of numerous guest singers .

General

Although it is attributed to Jools Holland , according to Allmusic , the album is more of a collection of different songs with different singers, with Hollands band acting as a kind of "house band". These include Eric Clapton , Steve Winwood , Van Morrison, and George Harrison . The song "Horse to the Water", which Harrison wrote with his son Dhani, is the last song that was recorded before Harrison's death in 2001 and is thus his legacy, even if Allmusic reviewer Richie Unterberger does not have a good hair with the song. Jools Holland was the line-up to exploit his contacts that he hosted the BBC telecast Later with Jools Holland was able to make. The singers range from musical veterans like Van Morrison or Steve Winwood to representatives of the younger generation like Jamiroquai or Joe Strummer, a founding member of The Clash .

In addition to the majority of blues and rhythm and blues titles, other styles are also among the selected songs, for example the ska title "Oranges and Lemons Again" with Suggs or the title "Valentine Moon" with Sam Brown. In addition to cover versions, for example of "I Put a Spell on You", there are songs that were created especially for the album ("The Return of the Blues Cowboy", "The Hand That Changed It's Mind".)

The album peaked at number 19 on the Billboard Heatseekers chart .

Reviews

The album received three out of five stars in the Down Beat and was rated as "glamorous fun". Entertainment Weekly considered the album to be “an elegantly arranged collection of R&B and pop gems, chaired by ex- squeeze keyboarder Holland”. Rolling Stone's reviewer thinks the album is well done: “Big names that either R & B sing oldies or new songs that sound old. "The album is" star studded and well played. "In contrast, The Graham Weekly Album Review # 1265 (2002) states:" The CD is not without disappointments ... Despite some missteps, it's an album that is both fascinating and a lot of fun. "

  3. Unterberger writes: “Harrison was a great musician, but this is not a great or good track; the song isn't much, and his voice, unfortunately, sounds like it's in faltering shape. "
