Johannes "Joop" Age Bakker (born May 21, 1921 in Bolsward , Friesland province , † October 3, 2003 in Wassenaar , South Holland province ) was a Dutch politician of the Anti-Revolutionaire Partij and the Christian Democratisch Appèl , Vice Prime Minister and Minister .

Life

After attending a Protestant elementary school and the Rijks Hogere Burgerschool in Sneek, studied economics at the Netherlands Business School Rotterdam from 1941 to 1947 , with an interruption due to the Second World War .

After the war he began his political career in local politics as a member of the local council and as an alderman in Bolsward.

In 1949 he joined the family business JA Bakker en Zoon , a bakery ingredients factory in Bolsward , as a co-owner . He worked there until 1955. In 1955 he was first mayor of Andijk and then from 1959 to 1963 of Hoogeveen .

State Secretary and Minister

In 1963 he became State Secretary for Economic Affairs in the cabinet of Prime Minister Victor Marijnen . He also took over this office in the government of Jo Cals and was in this until 1966 responsible for affairs of the middle class and for regional industrialization.

In the subsequent government of Prime Minister Jelle Zijlstra , Bakker became Minister of Economic Affairs on November 22, 1966 and held this office until 1967.

Piet de Jong appointed him on April 5, 1967 in his cabinet as Vice Prime Minister and Minister for Transport and Water Management. At the same time, as Minister, he was responsible for coordinating the affairs of Suriname and the Netherlands Antilles and held all ministerial offices until 1971. In the parliamentary elections in 1971 Bakker ran for the ARP list and became a member of the Second Chamber of the States General on May 11, 1971. In 1972 he resigned his parliamentary mandate after he became CEO of the insurer Algemene Friesche, Groot-Noordhollandsche en Olveh . He held the office of CEO for ten years.
