José Maurício Bustani (born June 5, 1945 in Porto Velho , Rondônia ) is a Brazilian former diplomat .

Life

In 1967, Bustani completed a law degree at the Pontifícia Universidade Católica do Rio de Janeiro , practiced the profession of lawyer, completed the Curso Preparatório à Carreira Diplomática of the Rio Branco Institute and was appointed Secretary of the Third Class. From 1967 to 1970 he was taken on as assistant to the general secretary of the Itamaraty , who headed the international relations department, and where he was appointed second class secretary in recognition of his achievements in 1969.

As such, Bustani was posted to Moscow from 1970 to 1973 and to Vienna from 1973 to 1975 . Subsequently, he was appointed assistant to the head of the international organizations department until 1977, and in 1976 he was appointed secretary of the first class. From 1977 to 1984 Bustani took up a position at the UN headquarters , where he was promoted to the Legation Council in 1979 and second-class envoy in 1983. In the meantime, in 1980 he was a delegate to the General Assembly of the United Nations on the subject of the occupation of Afghanistan. Also as second class envoy, Bustani was transferred to Montevideo from 1984 to 1986 and from 1987 to 1992 as consul general to Montreal . He then headed the Technology, Household and Development Department until 1993 and then the International Organizations Department until 1997, and in this role he was appointed First Class Ambassador in 1995.

After Bustani was a member of the preparatory committee for the establishment of the Organization for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons in The Hague from 1996 , he headed the newly established Organization for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons from May 13, 1997 to July 25, 2002. According to Milton Cordova Junior, Bustani proved to be the integrity leader of this organization. At the instigation of the George W. Bush cabinet in search of a cause for the Iraq war , he was replaced. According to Bustani, John Bolton flew to The Hague, came into his office and said, "Cheney wants to get rid of you. You have 24 hours to leave the organization. If you don't follow Washington's decision, we have opportunities to retaliate ... We know where your children live. " His two sons were living in New York at the time.

In 2003, Brazil's new government under Lula immediately sent Bustani to the prestigious post of ambassador to the British royal court ; since February 5, 2008 he served as ambassador in Paris, from where he was also accredited in Monaco from September 13th . His term of office ended in 2015.

Private

José Maurício Bustani is the son of Maurício José Bustani and Guajarina de Figueiredo Bustani, his sister is the pianist Linda Bustani . He is married to Janine-Monique Bustani, who is the deputy representative of the Brazilian government at UNESCO and who previously worked at the Brazilian embassy in Paris. Her children are Camilla, Diogo and Lourenço; they also have two grandchildren.
