The José Olaya Balandra is a research vessel of the Peruvian Instituto del Mar del Perú (IMARPE).
history
The ship was on the 1,998 yard Shimonoseki Shipyard & Machinery Works in Japanese Shimonoseki built. Construction began with the first steel cut on September 9, 1997. The ship was completed in March 1998.
The ship was made available to Peru by Japan through the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA). It is named after José Silveiro Olaya Balandra, a Peruvian patriot fighting for independence from Spain .
Technical specifications
The vessel is powered by a Caterpillar - diesel engine of the type 3512TA 1050 PS power driven. Three generators powered by Caterpillar 3304 diesel engines, each with an output of 65 kW, are available to generate electricity .
The ship is equipped for fishing and oceanographic research. Among other things, the ship is equipped with echo sounder and sonar systems as well as various fishing nets for fishing and taking samples from marine life. Winches are available for towing nets and research equipment.
The deck superstructures are in the front half of the ship. Behind it is an open working deck. A crane is installed at the stern . Another lifting tool is located on the port side of the ship.
There is space for 14 crew members and 16 scientists on board . The ship can stay at sea for 30 days.
