José Cardinal da Costa Nunes (born March 15, 1880 in Candelária , Azores , † November 29, 1976 in Rome ) was Patriarch of the East Indies and later Cardinal Curia of the Roman Church .

Life

José da Costa Nunes received his theological and philosophical training in the seminary of Angra do Heroísmo . At the end of his studies he went to Macau as a missionary , where he received the sacrament of ordination on June 4, 1903 . From 1903 to 1906 he worked as a pastor and lecturer. In 1906 the local bishop appointed him vicar general of Macau and Timor . José da Costa Nunes founded Oriente magazine .

In 1920 Pope Benedict XV appointed him . as Bishop of Macau , the episcopal ordination donated to him on November 20, 1921, the Bishop of Angra , Manuel Damasceno da Costa .

Pope Pius XII In 1940 made him head of the Archdiocese of Goa , with which the title of Patriarch of East India goes hand-in-hand. In 1953, José da Costa Nunes became President of the Standing Committee for the International Eucharistic Congresses. In 1953 the Pope appointed him titular Archbishop of Odessus , in December of the same year he became Vice-Camerlengo of the Holy Roman Church. Pope John XXIII took him on March 19, 1962 as a cardinal priest with the titular church Santa Prisca in the college of cardinals . José Cardinal da Costa Nunes participated in the Second Vatican Council from 1962 to 1965 .

He died on November 29, 1976 in Rome and was buried in the Campo Verano cemetery there before his bones were transferred to the church of Sant'Antonio dei Portoghesi .
