The Archdiocese of Goa and Daman ( Latin Archidioecesis Goana et Damanensis , Portuguese Arquidiocese de Goa e Damão ) is an archdiocese of the Roman Catholic Church in India . It was directly subordinate to the Holy See until it was established as an ecclesiastical province on November 25, 2006 .
history
On January 31, 1533 , the Diocese of Goa , which included the entire territory from the Cape of Good Hope to Japan , was established from the Archdiocese of Funchal and on February 4, 1558 was elevated to an archdiocese and metropolis ; at the same time the archbishopric gave up parts of its territory to establish the dioceses of Cochin and Malacca . In 1637 the Apostolic Vicariate Idalcan was outsourced. On September 1, 1886 , the new Diocese of Daman was created from parts of the archdiocese . The Archbishop of Goa was given by Leo XIII. the title of " Patriarch of the East Indies ", a titular patriarch without special jurisdiction , to compensate for the loss of his " Padroado rights" in British India and thus to find a way out of the so-called " Goan Schism ". On May 1, 1928 , both dioceses were reunited to form the Archdiocese of Goa e Damão . Parts of the diocese were ceded to the newly established diocese of Belgaum on September 19, 1953 .
In addition to Goa , the area of the archdiocese also includes Dadra and Nagar Haveli and Daman and Diu . On November 25, 2006 , the Archdiocese of Pope Benedict XVI. with the Apostolic Constitution Cum Christi Evangelii raised again to the metropolitan bishopric. The only suffragan is the Bishop of Sindhudurg . The patriarchal title was retained and has since been awarded to the incumbent archbishop as an honorary title (ad honorem) . Cathedral Church of the Patriarchate is St. Catherine of Alexandria in Old Goa .
