Josef Dobner (born April 5, 1898 in Tachov , † March 20, 1972 in Villach ) was an Austrian sculptor .
Life
Because the cattle dealer 's son was a good draftsman, he was allowed to attend the technical school for turnery and carpentry in Hallstatt . In this school he also came into contact with wood carving. In 1915 the 17-year-old went to the Isonzo Front as a volunteer . After the war he continued his education in Hallstatt and then at the Academy of Applied Arts in Vienna . After completing his studies, Dobner was Anton Hanak's assistant until 1926 . That year, Clemens Holzmeister brought him to Salzburg , where the new festival hall was about to be completed. Within two weeks, over a dozen portrait busts of personalities who had made a contribution to the building, as well as two dozen grotesque heads for the balconies, had to be created. An architect then consulted him for furnishing work in Viennese cottage districts. The first public recognition of the now 30-year-old was a state award for his juggler made of limewood in 1928. In 1930 the freelancer was given a state studio in Vienna's Prater. Here was u. a. a way of the cross consisting of 14 stations. A bronze cast was placed in the Seipel-Dollfuss Memorial Church, and the Italian government acquired another.
The year 1935 brought the sculptor to Carinthia. He was appointed to the Federal Trade School in Villach to teach stone and wood carving. After Austria's annexation , Dobner was one of the preferred artists of the Carinthian Nazi greats (Hitler bust, Klausner busts, Klausner tomb). In 1945 the sculpture department was closed and the now 47-year-old teacher and artist subsequently had to make ends meet as a freelancer. Well-known works by his hand are the Paracelsus relief in Villach and the portrait busts of Paracelsus, Arnold Clementschitsch and ancient historian Rudolf Egger as well as the memorial for the Villach forest cemetery from 1953.Sepp Dobner died shortly before he was 74 on March 20, 1972 in Villach.
