Josef Dominik Škroup
Josef Dominik Škroup (born August 2, 1766 in Včelákov ; † August 10, 1830 in Osice ) was a Bohemian composer and father of František Škroup and Jan Nepomuk Škroup , who were also active as composers.
He left behind numerous compositions, especially church music, including 20 Latin masses, hymns, graduals , oratorios , a concerto for organ and orchestra and a horn concerto.
Life
Škroup was orphaned at the age of eight and grew up with his uncle, a cantor . After completing his teacher training in Pardubice , he taught first in Rosice , from 1787 to 1797 in Libišany , then in Býšť until he came to Osice in 1800, where he lived until his death.
Škroup enjoyed a high reputation as a conductor , organist and instrumentalist. His compositions combine Neapolitan and classical style elements. His compositions for horn and for organ are characterized by a lively rhythm, contrasting themes and clear form.
