Josef Folttmann

Josef Folttmann (born January 18, 1887 in Breslau , † April 11, 1958 in Aachen ) was a German officer in the Wehrmacht , most recently with the rank of lieutenant general .

Career and First World War

Josef Folttmann occurred on 18 March 1907 as a cadet in the Fusilier Regiment Field Marshal Count Moltke (Silesian) no. 38 one in which he on 19 December 1907 Ensign and on August 18, 1908. Further career

From July 19, 1918, he served as Ib in the General Staff of the 5th Guard Infantry Division and from November 4, 1918 as General Staff Officer at the Chief of the General Staff of the Field Army and from August 12, 1919 in the General Staff of the Kolberg command post. On October 1, 1919, he was accepted into the Reichswehr and transferred to the staff of Group Command 1 . On October 1, 1921, he came as a company commander in the 9th Infantry Regiment and on October 1, 1924 as a consultant in the Army Department of the Reichswehr Ministry . From October 1, 1927 he was a teacher at the infantry school , where he was promoted to major on April 1, 1929 . On February 1, 1930, he became Chief of Staff for the Army Education and Training Inspectorate. Promoted to lieutenant colonel on September 1, 1933 , he took over command of the 2nd Battalion of the 7th Infantry Regiment on October 1, 1933 . From October 1, 1934 to October 15, 1935 he commanded the III. (Jäger-) Battalion of the Infantry Regiment Görlitz, where he was promoted to colonel on July 1, 1935 . He was then commander of the 52nd Infantry Regiment and, from November 10, 1938, of the 102nd Infantry Regiment.

Second World War

On April 20, 1939, he was promoted to major general and on May 1, 1939, he was transferred to the Army High Command as inspector of personnel auditing . When the Second World War broke out, he took over command of the 256th Infantry Division on September 1, 1939 , but only commanded it until January 10, 1940. Following this, he took over command of the 164th Infantry Division . He led this during the Balkan campaign and then on Crete , where he was promoted to lieutenant general on February 1, 1941 . On January 10, 1942, the division was renamed Fortress Division Crete , with Major General Folttmann remaining as division commander. On August 11, 1942 , he was transferred to the OKH's Führerreserve , and on November 10, 1942, he became the commander of the 338th Infantry Division , which was an occupation force in Antwerp. On January 10, 1944, he was appointed commander of the Special Staff III in the OKH, and on April 8, 1945 he was reassigned to the Führerreserve. At the end of the war he was taken prisoner, from which he was released on September 9, 1947.
