Josef Klarer

Josef Klarer (born January 10, 1898 in Munich , † June 21, 1953 in Wuppertal -Elberfeld) was a German chemist, known for the development of sulfonamides .

Klarer studied mechanical engineering from 1918 and then chemistry from 1920 at the TH Munich , where he received his doctorate in 1926 under Hans Fischer . In 1927 he went to the pharmaceutical laboratory of IG Farben in Elberfeld .

From 1927 he worked with Fritz Mietzsch on the pharmaceutical effects of azo dyes , which in 1932 led to the development of sulfonamides with the help of Gerhard Domagk . The first sulfonamide came onto the market in 1935 as Prontosil . Klarer was also involved in the search for other sulfonamides such as Uliron against gonococci in 1935, Marfanil in 1938 and Marbadal in 1943/44.
