Josef Koncz

Josef Koncz (born October 30, 1916 in Veľká ; † September 7, 1988 in Göttingen ) was a German cardiac surgeon and university professor .

Life

Koncz attended the German elementary school in Veľká and then the German-language grammar school in Kesmark , where he passed the Matura in 1934 . From 1934 he studied human medicine at the Charles University in Prague , in February 1941 he passed his state examination. After receiving his doctorate in the same year, he worked as a secondary doctor in Georgenberg until the end of September 1941 . He was drafted into the Slovak army and was used there as a medical officer. He took part in the Russian campaign. In the further course of the Second World War he worked in Rosenberg , Budapest and Baden as an assistant doctor and surgeon. From May 8, 1945 to October 12, 1945 he was in American, then in French captivity and during this time worked as a doctor in a hospital in Andernach .

Then Koncz worked as a trainee doctor in the hospital in Wuppertal - Barmen and on mid-November 1946 at the surgical university clinic in Göttingen . He held a position as a research assistant at the university clinic and completed his habilitation in January 1953 . Afterwards he worked as a senior physician, in August 1959 Koncz was appointed adjunct professor and from then on headed the newly established department for thoracic and cardiovascular surgery at the Göttingen University Clinic. In November 1967 he was appointed full professor. In 1971 he was one of the founders of the German Society for Thoracic, Cardiac and Vascular Surgery, and later he was an honorary member.

In 1982 he retired. In 1988 he received the Albrecht von Haller Medal, the highest distinction of the medical faculty of the Georg-August University in Göttingen .

Koncz was one of the “leading cardiac surgeons in the Federal Republic of Germany” and was “significantly involved in setting up and establishing the heart center in Göttingen, introducing the heart-lung machine.” His students included Rainer de Vivie and Dieter Regensburg. Between 1958 and 1981 Koncz supervised around 130 doctoral theses and ten habilitation theses.

He died of a heart attack on September 7, 1988.
